It’s been difficult for me to put into words how I feel after hearing of Herb’s passing. Herb took a bunch of naive athletes who didn’t know much about basketball, let alone life. He molded us into a championship team…a back-to-back city champions, I might add!
I was in a 4-year program but some of us went back to Beal 2 more years only because we wanted to play for Herb (6 years for me!... I wanted to go for 7 but Mrs. L or Bernie said …. Time to go to work!)
His dedication to helping us improve always pushed us to be our best selves, both on and of the court. His legacy will live on in the countless athletes he inspired and the values he instilled in us. I’m grateful for the time I spent with Herb and for the lessons that continue to guide me!
Roz, you were always at our games providing oranges at half time, giving advice and never got the assistant coach status you deserved! You and Herb were a great duo and inspiration for all.

Dear Roz and family,
My sincere condolences for Herb’s passing.
I first encountered Herb (at that time Mr. Peterson to me) as a grade 9 student at H.B. Beal S.S. He became my Phys Ed teacher and later my coach for the next 5 years. What he saw in a scrawny 14 year old I have no idea. I think it might have been that Herb and my Dad played on the same baseball team at that time and he hoped I might have inherited a sliver of my dad’s athletic ability. Whatever he saw it turned out to be one of the most fortunate things for me. Herb molded a group of young teenagers into a formidable basketball team over the following years and turned us into disciplined young men with great character. It gave me 5 unforgettable years and lifetime friendships.
Herb gave his time generously and unselfishly not only to our group but to the many teams he coached throughout his teaching career. I’m sure he touched many lives in a positive way as did mine. Herb also paid it forward as the things he taught me inspired me to coach numerous school and city basketball teams.
Roz and Kara, I know you will miss him but you can be proud of the contributions that Herb has made to many lives along the way.

Dear Herb – You were not just an excellent coach but were also a great educator. You taught us that dedication and perseverance are a winning combination. You taught us that nothing less than 100% was acceptable. You taught us to be humble winners and gracious in losing but never to believe that losing was acceptable. You taught us to be respectful to our friends, family and others that we might meet. You taught us to be loyal to those we cherish, and to be true to our beliefs, and to stand up for those beliefs. Most important of all you taught us to believe in ourselves. Aside from these lessons in life you molded a team of talented athletes into champions, whose friendship endures to this day – “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers” (from Shakespeare’s Henry V).
I am really sorry I cannot be at your tribute gathering, as I am away on business travel, but would have loved to reminisce with everyone. We are better for having known you. Thank you for being a big part of my life.
John Brinkman Beal Raiders 1967-1972.

In 1965 I chose to attend H.B.Beal instead of following my classmates to Oakridge. At the time, Herb was a young Phys Ed teacher on staff who asked each of his colleagues if they had spotted any athletes in gym class, or other sports teams. He then approached each one and convinced them to try out for the new junior basketball team.
As it turned out, none of us were basketball players at the time. In fact, the only basketball I ever played before entering high school was at a small summer camp. Herb changed all of that. He coached us to become a team that would go on to win back-to-back city championships in 1968/9 and 1969/70.
Most important, Herb cared about us; caused us to believe in ourselves and in each other; he instilled in us a positive winning attitude. What a lasting gift he gave, and no doubt, he gave it naturally to hundreds of other young formative adolescents. He gave us the life lessons that matter the most.
Our group of team mates still get together each year... 54 years later. I credit some of my happiest moments and lasting friendships to Herb Peterson.
"Thanks coach".

Herb Peterson was one of those teachers who made high school more meaningful for his many students through his commitment to extracurricular actiivities. Those whom he coached became better people and maintained a friendship with Coach Peterson long after their high school days were done. He was an influencer. He will be missed by many. Condolences to Roslyn and family.

My sincerest condolences to the family of Herbert Peterson. As a basketball coach at Catholic Central, I had many opportunities to be with him in the gym during the basketball games. The games were usually close and fiercely contested because Coach Peterson always had his teams well prepared and well coached. It always took your best effort to compete with him. His coaching demeanor and philosophy made coaches like me better.
I had the privilege of see him at the Byron Legion last year and we shared a few pleasant memories.
I will always remember his smile, his friendly banter, his common sense. May he Rest In Peace.

Herb Peterson was one of those teachers who not only excelled in the classroom, but who enriched the lives of hundreds of students through his involvement with extracurricular activities. It is these ‘extras’ that students remember the most after they graduate and Herb endowed many with his life lessons through coaching. They maintained their friendships with him and many went on to continue his legacy. These are the gifts that all teachers aspire to with their students. Herb made this difference……an influencer. Our gratitude.
He will be missed.
Sincerest condolences to Rosalyn and family.

Mr. Peterson was my high school basketball coach and I was lucky enough to also have him as an English teacher. I still remember one of the stories we read and discussed called ‘Teahouse of the August Moon’. There was something special about being able to see and hear Mr. Peterson in a different context than the gym. He was soft, inclusive, and fascinated by the students.
In the gymnasium, he was fun, liked to play little pranks or jokes with kids he shared relationships with. He just really loved his job.
As a coach, he was more interested in teaching you lessons to grow you as a person than as a player. Execution was of course important, but he cared more for the overall kid than the moments on the court.
Mr. Peterson had a glint in his eye when he smiled or winked. I’ve missed it since high school, and I’ll miss it even more now.
