Obituary of Gwendolyn Frances Howlett
GWENDOLYN FRANCES HOWLETT passed away on Friday, August 20th, 2021, in her 99th year. Gwen is survived by her 4 children Greg (Mairead), Jane (Murray), Ann (Bruce) and Jill (Ivan), 9 grandchildren – Stephanie (Bill), Allie (Scott) , Jessica (Pat), Sarah (Bernie), Dylan, Eva (Logan), Mika, Kevin (Erika) and Damian (Laura), and 11 great grandchildren – Cameron, Gwen, Liam, Brielle, Tristan, Kobe, Finn, Evie, Quinn, Everson and Oliver. Her motivation in life was her career, her studies, the outdoors and hiking in particular, music and family. She was a woman of indomitable spirit and a shining example to all of us. We will miss her greatly.
As a young woman Gwen spent 3 years studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and sang opera semi professionally, led choirs and taught piano. Later, Gwen returned to school and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at the age of 54.
Gwen had worked as a Secretary, Teacher and Executive Director. She was an active member of the Brantford Opera Guild and the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation for many years. A beautiful pianist, she entertained her family and co-residents with her playing. Even at the age of 98 she was hard to beat at Scrabble.
Adventurous, her travels took her to Europe, Panama, New Zealand and Australia. Closer to home she loved her Nahanni River adventure and visits to Killarney and Temagami. For many years she enjoyed walking on the Grand River Trails and published a book on that subject.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be announced at a later date when it is safe to gather. In lieu of flowers and in acknowledgement of Gwen’s passions, donations in her name to an environmental or arts charity of your choice
