Obituary of Stephen John Glavin

GLAVIN (the 3rd) Stephen John Sept. 17, 1960 - May 19, 2020 A cherished father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, cousin and colleague. Your maps steered you away from us for now but you will never be far from our hearts and minds. Passed peacefully in the loving embrace of his fiancé, children and sister at Victoria General Hospital. Steve joined his angelic mother Kathleen Marie Glavin (nee Ireland) and close Uncle Terrence Glavin. Leaving to mourn his amazing children Flora-May Chubbs and Stephen John Glavin the 4th Chubbs, Outer Cove, Newfoundland; caring fiancé Katerina Novak and her children Anique and Phoebe, Belmont, Ontario; dear father and stepmother Stephen John Glavin the 2nd and Lillian (Lyn) Black-Glavin, Guelph, Ontario; special sister Patricia (Patti) Dalton (nee Glavin), London, Ontario; caring brother Dr. Verne Glavin and spouse Dr. Pamela Craigie, Hamilton, Ontario. Many thanks to aforementioned and the staff of Victoria General for their incredible care during his sudden illness. Also left to mourn siblings Darcy Glavin and Sylvia Vickers (nee Glavin), Calgary and St. John's. Nieces and nephews: Melissa Dalton; John, Joanna and Kaylee Glavin; and Daniel, Randell (Randy), and Raquel Vickers. Also mourning close aunt Patricia Glavin (nee Hunt) and her children--who are as close as siblings: Dr. Marc and Susanna Glavin (nee Sarkar) and Lisanne Glavin; Inspector (Ret'd) Gibson Glavin and spouse Audrey and many Glavins, Chubbs, Irelands and Hammonds. Fondly remembered by fun-loving step siblings and Kingsford Crescent neighbours Jamie, Alexander and Pamela Black. A pioneer in digital ocean mapping Steve attained a Masters in Environmental Science from Queens' University and Geography/Cartography 1st Class Honours Bachelor from Carleton University. At first "on loan" from Hydrographic Services and then outright "stolen" by a St. John's nautical data firm Steve sailed on vessels and worked out of Monaco, Iceland, Scotland - to name but a few. Ever humble, he once passed on an offer to show his work to Queen Elizabeth II. Raised in a new suburb of Ottawa, Steve had "rock star" status in Kanata due to his singular clothing style and singular talents ... his artwork, his eclectic musical discoveries, his house design/renovations and prowess in the outdoors. Steve trained for long canoe portages, fashioned clothes from hides and built shelters. A backyard fort he made for his children was admired by architects. His magnetic personality, quick wit and intelligence will be sorely missed. Thankfully his traits have been passed on to his children; Flora has his artistic gene in abundance. Since he was equally content next to one of his famous bonfires with his oceanview, Outer Cove as watching elks off his backyard in Belmont we will always be with you when in nature.
